About Athlete at Heart

Who am I?

I’m Stephanie, an early 30s girl who’s spent most of my life in the Midwest.  I’ve always thought of myself as an athlete, having grown up playing organized sports including volleyball and basketball and swimming competitively for 13 years.  Since 2008 I’ve done triathlons (sprint and Ironman 70.3!), road races (including 3 half marathons), and 3 excursions on RAGBRAI (a week-long bike ride across the state of Iowa).

I write about my athletic adventures, travel, healthy living, and life in general.  I write about mental health because I have been dealing with depression and anxiety and I think it is important to be open and hopefully let others know they aren’t alone.

I love training, competing, and trying new things.  I love the feeling of pushing myself.  I’m a chronic goal setter.  I’m super hard on myself and I expect a lot of others.  I want to live my life to the fullest by being active, healthy, happy, and aware and I’m not above doing some crazy things to accomplish this.  I want to connect with others, inspire, and be inspired!

What is Athlete at Heart?

Three words that I’ve always felt defined me.  I’m an athlete but I’m far from being elite.  I swim, bike, and run, but not fast.  I race for fun and personal bests, not for places or prizes.  I’m injury prone.  I have a lot to learn about training and nutrition.  But my heart is in it.

Being an “Athlete at Heart” is a feeling; a mindset.  It’s living an active, healthy life.  Testing your limits and pushing beyond your comfort zone.  Setting and reaching goals.  It’s striving to better yourself on and off the playing field.  Being sound and strong in mind, body, and soul.  Pursuing your interests, athletics and everything else, with dedication and passion.  Living life to the fullest.  I’m willing to bet there’s a little athlete in everyone!

I want to share my journey to a healthier, more active life.  I want to talk about nutrition, workouts, gear, training, races, food, health, love, life, family, motivation, and fitting it all in.  I want to hear your thoughts and ideas and build a support group of like-minded people.
