52 Activities in a Jar: Week 6

This year I wrote 52 activities on slips of paper and put them in a jar.  I am drawing one out every Sunday and trying to complete that activity during the week.  Some will have me serving others, some will be something I’ve never done, and some are just for fun.  The idea is to add a little variety to each week.  Feel free to join in any time!

Time to reveal this week’s draw!  Which I forgot to photograph! :)

Try A New Restaurant

I chose to go to a restaurant called Cafe Indigo with my friend Steve.

We weren’t even in the door before a guy (who would be our waiter) was calling at us from across the way “just 2 today?” and telling us what table to sit at.  He brought our menus and asked for our drink order.  Steve said “I’ll have a glass of water”.  The waiter said “okay, 2 waters!” and walked away without ever getting my order.  Hmm.

As I was looking over the menu, which had some tasty-sounding things on it, I saw this:

Now, I’m sure the intent was to be funny.  It didn’t have that effect on me though.  I totally get the first sentence, asking that you allow time for them to make our food fresh.  Adding the rest implies that you shouldn’t even bother unless you have time to spare.  It set me up to think lunch would be a 1-2 hour event which isn’t necessarily what you want when you go to a cafe.  It was also unfounded as it took 15 minutes for our order to come out (I timed :) ).

The second thing I dislike is how they feel the need to bash another restaurant in writing on their menu.  Why is that necessary?  You can hold whatever opinion of McDonald’s or any other restaurant you want.  I may not even disagree with you.  It just really rubs me the wrong way when any business or event tears down something else to make themselves look better.

After ordering I had a chance to look around.  The mural was beautiful.

Then there were these super quirky framed pieces that I have named “Pretentious Owls in Top Hats”.

The one on the left is telling a story, in French, about a boy named Felix.  The one on the right is sharing the rules of croquet.  On the opposite wall another fancy owl told us the rules of cricket.  Bizarre!

The food was pretty good, and quick! 😛  Steve had a club sandwich and I had a cheese steak melt that came on really nice grainy sandwich bread.  I do wish I would have known they would bring a bowl of chips for the table though.  I wouldn’t have gotten chips for my side.  It was a lot of chips.

All in all it was just okay.  I didn’t really like the service or the general vibe I got there.  The food, while good, was not so great that it overcame the other aspects.  It was worth a shot though.  You never know when you might find a new favorite!

When was the last time you tried a new restaurant?

Those chips look so good – i tend to go to the same places all the time. Really should check out somewhere new
