Coming Back from (Yet Another) Sprain

in Injury

My ankles have had a rough time of it.  I am just not easy on them.  I sprained my ankle about once a year when I played basketball in middle and high school.  That’s what happens when you play down low.  You go up for a rebound and come down on someone’s foot.  I would estimate I’ve had about a dozen sprains in my life.  This past December made lucky number thirteen!

Exactly one week before Christmas I sprained my ankle while playing in my indoor volleyball league.  It HURT.  A lot.  So much that I went in to get x-rays the next day because I was worried it was worse than just a sprain.  No breaks though, just a bad high ankle sprain.  Luckily I already had the equipment to get me through this injury.

I drove to Georgia two days after spraining the ankle, which was tough because I couldn’t wear the boot while driving.  Thank goodness for cruise control!  Once I got to Georgia I was able to rest a lot while hanging out with the family and watching Hallmark movies.  It looked a lot like this.

I finally was able to walk normally just over a week ago.  I’m able to bike (yay for having an indoor trainer!) and briskly walk right now but the ankle is not quite ready for running.  The pounding is too hard on it.  I’m doing some PT exercises to help strengthen it.  And I’ll be playing volleyball again tonight.  I need to take it easy.  Note to self: do not sacrifice body to make a play this week. (I have several pairs of pants with holes in the knees from doing this.)

Have you ever sprained an ankle?

I’m a runner so I’ve always dreaded a leg or foot injury I just wasn’t expecting it to happen doing normal everyday things or as dramatic I’ve never sprained or broken a bone up until now.

A couple days ago I went out to check the mail it was starting to get dark out well I looked down at my watch to see what time it was and I stepped in a small hole on the side of the driveway I rolled my ankle, it made a sickly pop and I slammed knees first onto the concrete driveway(while wearing shorts on top of it all) I hugged my ankle looked over at my son on the porch with a “I REALLY NEED HELP” look and I let out a girly whimper and started crying like a giant 44 yo baby. My son ran over went into hulk mode and scooped me up and carried me into the house. It completely crushed my ego I was so embarrassed. A trip to the ER the next day confirmed a severe sprain and no fractures.

I don’t look forward to spraining it ever again it hurt way more than I expected.

Oh no! I hope you heal quickly. If they gave you ankle exercises, definitely do them. They really do help. And I love that your son went in to “hulk mode” to help you. Good kid :)

I definitely will. I’m stuck with a boot for about a week I think they said.
Heh, I know he’s a great kid even though he ain’t a kid lol I’m just glad he was out there when it happened. He said afterwards “Once you started crying I knew shit just got REAL.” lol I honestly thought I broke my ankle that’s how bad it hurt.
