If you remember back in August I started a 3 month Heart Rate Training challenge for myself. It’s been a month so it’s time for an update!
I’ll be honest, this challenge is difficult for me. I have read all the reasons why heart rate training is effective and important and good for you but it doesn’t change one fact… I HATE GOING SLOW!
I’m trying to keep my heart rate in the aerobic zone, or 70-80% of my maximum heart rate, as shown by my handy little table.
Currently, in order to stay in this zone I am doing an average pace of about 3 mph or 20 mins/mile. That is SO painfully slow. It is also not running. It is walking, with veeeerrrrrry slow jogging on flats and downhills. Anything more than that and my heart rate spikes into the Anaerobic zone.
Everything I have read has told me that this sort of “slow down” period is completely normal and that it is frustrating for all athletes that do it. Sadly, I’ve also read that it can last quite some time. Months.
I also know that I am very out of shape. I haven’t done much consistently since the very beginning of 2013 so I really am starting from scratch. For this reason maybe it is better that I start off very slow so my body can adjust but I know I can do more than I am now.
I guess I’ll just have to keep at it and see if I see any drop in my average pace in the next two months. Stay tuned for future updates!
