Unreal Candy Taste Test

Have you heard of Unreal Candy?  It is a brand that makes cleaner versions of popular candy like M&Ms, Snickers, Milky Way, and Reese’s PB cups.

Their slogan is “Candy Unjunked”.  According to their packaging this means:

  • No chemicals
  • No hydrogenated anything
  • No preservatives
  • No corn syrup
  • No artificial anything
  • No GMOs

I first heard about them on Jillian Michael’s podcast but didn’t think much of it until I saw them at Target.  My friends and I bought the Unreal and the original brand of peanut M&Ms, Snickers, and Reese’s to do a taste test.  Here are our results:

  • PB cups – Reese’s was the winner.  I thought the Unreal pb cups had a weird aftertaste.  Not sure anyone does peanut butter and chocolate better than Reese’s.
  • Snickers – Results were split.  Snickers brand was saltier and the peanuts were crunchier and my friends liked that.  I thought Unreal had better tasting chocolate though and were quite tasty.
  • M&Ms – Unreal won.  They’re good!

The taste test showcased one thing: the name brand candies were extremely sugary.  I’ve never noticed it when eating them alone, but eating them next to the Unreal candy made them seem almost sickeningly sweet.  I remember thinking “wow, the Unreal candy is plenty sugary enough for me”.

I definitely like the idea of candy with less of the chemicals and other bad stuff usually found in highly processed foods.  I think these will be a good substitute when I’m really feeling like a sweet snack.

Have you tried Unreal?  What do you think?

I got the chance to try this last year when it first launched and was surprised at how good it was – now you made me want to go buy candy!!
