My Second Trip to China!

Hello everyone!

Yes, I’m still alive.  Just in a land where social media sites are well and effectively blocked.  I get emails that people have tweeted or Facebook’d me and there is nothing I can do about it!

Anyway, I’ve been in China all week doing training for my company.  It’s my second trip (first trip: part 1 and part 2) and it’s been a good one.  Unfortunately I am in the same locations that I was last time so not as much is new.  BUT there is still plenty to experience!

The first day I was feeling less than spectacular so I did a run in the hotel’s gym.  The treadmills looked out on Beijing.

After I got cleaned up I headed to the hotel spa (they put us up in a very nice place) for a 60 minute facial.  It was fabulous and relaxing and I felt like a million bucks afterward.

The food, as usual when traveling, has been one of the highlights.  One night our Chinese coworkers took my team out to dinner.  On the first floor they had a huge room full of tanks for you to pick your own seafood.  I was very glad they ordered for us!

We had a private dining room upstairs that was beautiful.  The food was all put on a spinning tray in the middle of the table and served family style.  I wish I had gotten a picture because there was SO. MUCH. FOOD.

A few new things I tried:

  • Bamboo shoots (yum!)
  • Sweet potato noodles (good, but a really weird texture… and I’m trusting that it really was sweet potato.  I’d have never guessed that!)
  • Lotus root (meh)
  • Date juice (meh)
  • Sticky sweet rice steamed in lotus leaves (good)
  • Razor clams (delicious!)

There was also a LOT of beer served at dinner.  They taught us the Chinese word for “bottoms up” which is gombay and we learned that when someone says that and wants to celebrate with you, you must race to finish your glass.  Basically Chinese beer chugging for adults.  Being closest to college age may have worked in my favor…

Below are some other things I ate.  The drink in the bottom left picture was made with vodka, jasmine tea, lemon juice, and raspberries.  It was really good.  We decided to call it the Chinese Arnold Palmer. :)

Also, the last day at the office they ordered Papa Johns for us and there was a shrimp & wasabi pizza that was super tasty.  I betting I can’t get that in Iowa!

One of the coolest things this whole trip was going to an Irish Pub and finding an Iowa Hawkeyes flag.  GO HAWKS!

That’s all I have to share for now.  Tonight I head back to Beijing and tomorrow my team is going to the Great Wall before flying home.  See you online when I get back!

Sounds like you had a blast – I’ve watched Chinese travel shows and they always seem to eat weird bugs on sticks!
I would love to visit China one day

Ha, ewww! I’m sure there are really weird things there and I’m guessing the more rural areas are different than where I was. We were near the coast so it was a lot of seafood. I turned down shark fin, seahorses (:(), and sea cucumber!
