It’s RAGBRAI Time!

As you read this (unless you’re a day or two late!) I’m on my way to the western border of Iowa to start the (Des Moines) Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa.

2013-RAGBRAI-Route

As you can see above, I’ll be doing 17,410 feet of climb over 406.6 miles of biking in 7 days.  Luckily I’ve done it twice before so I know what I’m doing.  Sadly, I haven’t had much time to train this summer with all of my travel.

For those of you that might think I’m crazy, you’re probably right.  But it is SO. MUCH. FUN.

RAGBRAI is known as a traveling party.  Every year 10,000+ riders show up from all over the country and from other countries to make the trek, dipping their back tire in the Missouri River on Sunday and their front tire in the Mississippi River the next Saturday.

I truly believe RAGBRAI is the best way to see Iowa.  Every single town we pass through comes out to celebrate, showing us the best they’ve got.  The people are amazing.

There are a lot of cornfields and a lot of beer.  It is Iowa, after all!

There’s also a lot of spandex.  Luckily we’re all in that boat together so there’s no room for judging.

There is a lot of food.  Which is really important when you’re biking pretty much all day long.

Certain staples follow the route.  You can find Mr. Porkchop and his pink school bus, Pastafari with Bob Marley blaring, and a really solid pancake breakfast every day.  The rule is that even with 400+ miles of biking, if you lose weight on RAGBRAI you’re doing it wrong!

Most people tent camp for the whole week.  Our team tried getting home stays again this year (we did it in 2010 as well) so sometimes we’ll be staying in someone’s house and sometimes camping in their yards.  The nice thing about that is generally they give us access to real bathrooms.  Woot!

You can bike as fast or as slow as you want.  You can be as wild (half-naked slip and slide?) or as tame as you want.  And you’ll always have thousands of friends to do it with you.

I won’t be around on the blog much this week but check out Instagram and Twitter to keep up with me.

BIKE ON!
