Fitbloggin 2013 Recap: The Conference & The Food

I almost didn’t go to Fitbloggin this year.  I was already registered but with all of my work travel this summer I didn’t think it would be worth it.  Thank GOD I went!

This recap will be broken down into three parts.  This is about the conference, interspersed with pictures of food.  (There was a lot of yummy food!)  Other recaps coming soon:

  • New Friends & Funnies
  • Sponsors & Swag

I will try to keep them shorter than the 4th Harry Potter book but I can’t make any promises.  There’s so much to tell!

Fitbloggin is a conference for healthy living bloggers.  Roni Noone started it in 2010 so this was its 4th year.  It doesn’t matter if your interest is in fitness, healthy eating, weight loss, mental health, or all of the above.  It doesn’t matter if you blog as a personal outlet or if you make a living from it.  Almost everyone at the conference is a blogger (but you don’t have to be!) and we all have one thing in common: we are trying to live a healthier life.

This year the conference was held in Portland, OR at The Nines hotel.  It was super plush and fancy!

Okay… where to start.

The conference started on Thursday night with a welcome reception.  Everyone was meeting and mingling with everyone else and exchanging business cards.  I was SO nervous but everyone was incredibly welcoming.

(breakfast & lunch buffet)

Friday and Saturday were the meat of the conference.  In the mornings there were workouts like Zumba, yoga, crossfit, Reebok cardio dance, JumpSport trampoline, and boot camp.  The ones I went to were very fun and upbeat.  6 AM is really early when you’re on vacation though!

The mornings were filled with small group discussions on all kinds of topics and the afternoons were more information session on blogging, writing, and business.  A fantastic thing is that all of the sessions are “live blogged” meaning someone was there recording and writes recaps of it to share all the good information.  That way you benefit even if you didn’t make it to certain sessions!

(lunch a food truck called The Cheese Plate.  They served delicious grilled cheese, made with Oregon cheeses, and pickled green beans!)

In my opinion, real connections were made in the small group discussions.  I attended Tackling the Taboo of Therapy and listening to others sharing their struggles was really moving.  I have struggled so much with depression this last 18 months and sharing my story felt really good.  It made me realize that I am not alone.

Another session was Stop Keeping Up With the Joneses.  In it we discussed how easy it is to fall into the comparison trap, especially when reading blogs.  We see others who have achieved more and we feel like we aren’t as good.  The takeaway from this session was that we all do this and we all shouldn’t.

“We are all in different places in our journey to live healthier.  Wherever we are is OKAY.  We are enough, exactly as we are right now.”

Motivating Your Community to Choose Healthy Lifestyles was another small group discussion I attended.  We shared ways we have all become involved in our communities and tried to inspire those around us.  There were excellent ideas shared.  My favorite came from Badass Fitness girl Shannon:

“Be JOYFUL during exercise!”

To inspire others to live a healthy lifestyle we have to show that it is FUN.  It makes so much sense! :)

(a margarita at the hotel’s rooftop bar, overlooking downtown Portland)

The Google Analytics session was super informative and probably the most useful one that I attended.  I haven’t delved much into what information is there but now that I have an idea of how to use it, I’m definitely going to start.

I also attended a workshop called How to Create a Media Kit that Showcases Your Brand and Gets Companies Knocking on Your Door. (Phew!  That’s a mouthful!)  It was a really great session with tons of good information.  It definitely got me thinking about whether or not I want to explore the business side of blogging, but if I ever do I’m glad I have the information!

There were some other really good sessions I attended (and others I didn’t) but I have to stop or this post will go on forever!

(Voodoo donuts is a necessary stop in Portland!  And yes, that donut is actually called the “cock-n-balls”.  Bavarian cream in the base and the tip…)

(more from Voodoo: the Grape Ape, the Old Dirty Bastard… cake donut with Oreos and PB, and the Maple Blazer Blunt.  The stoner picture was bound to happen.)

Friday & Saturday evening were receptions.  Saturday night was a no-holds-barred dance party that was really fun.  Friday night we had a bunch of 5 minute speeches from attendees for what is called Ignite Fitness.  These were great.  Some were funny, some made people cry, some were informative.  There was a lot of cheering and support.  Two things to remember from these were:

“As long as you’re breathing, you should be trying.” (courtesy of Martinus)

And of course Christine’s awesome slide, which is basically the motto of Fitbloggin:

I had to leave early on Sunday morning so I said goodbye to everyone on Saturday night and was very sad to go.  I can’t say enough good things about this conference.  It was full of love and light and support.

I will definitely be returning!

Hey MZzz Stephanie! I am so glad we met as you exude such lovely, fun, endearing energy! As for that Cock and Balls doughnut, I am still laughing. I had no idea…..

Are you coming to FitSocial in CO in Sept? The answer is “yes” if you wondered!

Glad you enjoyed our city in the summer! Though Voodoo is for the birds. Next time you’re here, I’ll give you the real scoop on where to go for sweet treats.

Great recap. I am still on family vacation so I need to take some time to do mine. Wish I had created a journal or taken more notes along the way. Dubyawife was one of my favorite presentations too!

Stephanie July 3, 2013 at 4:43 PM

I took notes at some of the sessions but I can’t even find my notebook! Fat lot of good it did me 😛

Enjoy your vacation! You can recap later.

Great recap, Stephanie! It was so awesome getting to meet you in person. I’m really glad you joined Tracy and I for lunch at The Cheese Plate on Saturday so we had time to chat and get to know each other. :)
