You Are So Much More Than Just “Pretty”

This video.  I can’t not talk about it or share it.

This is one of those nights where I’m up way too late with way too much on my mind.  As my generation does, I’m distracting myself with YouTube videos until I’m tired.

I love poetry but I’ve never seen poetry slam.  It’s poems performed live.  No props or music or much movement at all.  Just words.  It kind of reminds me of when I did Group Interpretive Readings for Forensics in high school.  (An aside… Forensics may have been a Wisconsin thing?  None of my friends here in IA/IL had it at their high schools.)

In this video the performer kind of goes nuts on the word pretty.  It all stems from the question every little girl has at some point in their lives: “Will I be pretty?”  Her words are powerful.

This is about the self-mutilating circus we have painted ourselves clowns in. About women who will prowl 30 stores in six malls to find the right cocktail dress, but haven’t a clue where to find fulfillment or how to wear joy…”

Do you know how to wear joy?  We spend so much time and money on our outside.  We should spend at least as much time working on our inside.

It was the end of this little poetry rant that got to me though.  Where she talks about what she will say to her daughter someday.

“The word pretty is unworthy of everything you will be…”

We should all think this way.  We should remind each other when we forget.  When we are struggling and get caught up in the superficial things.  We are all pretty talented in so many different ways.  Maybe you are pretty kind, pretty smart, pretty handy, pretty funny.  You are pretty amazing.  So am I.

That’s way more important than just being pretty.
