A Good Way to Wake Up

I’m not a morning person nor am I a morning exerciser.  I do it, on occasion, when I’m following a training schedule and fitting my workout in during any other part of the day is impossible.  But I never choose it.

This morning I met a friend for a swim before work.  I needed the motivation of having someone waiting for me to get me back on track after my two-week break from working out.  I was grumpy when I got up.  I felt exhausted and nauseous.  If it had just been me going I’d have reset my alarm for an hour later.  But I got up, put on my suit, and headed out the door.

The minute I started swimming all I could think was “wow, this is a great way to wake up”.  I’ve never liked running right after waking up because my legs haven’t had time to warm up and it kind of hurts.  Swimming is different.  There’s no impact so my body didn’t protest.  My brain had time to wake up slowly and I was able to get in a good workout.

I had packed a bag the night before so I showered and got ready for work at the gym.  I left feeling pretty refreshed!  As the day wore on I got tired but not significantly more than I do normally.  The great thing is that swimming in the morning in no way prevents me from doing a workout in the evening.

I’m by no means saying that I will become a morning exerciser and swim every day before work.  But I do think I want to try to do this more often if I can.  Having someone to meet will be a necessity though!
