The 4th of July is always a good day for a race! Except when it’s almost 100 degrees plus humidity 😛 Oh well. The firecracker run here is a pretty laid back race. No separated starting corrals or anything like that. Just about 2,000 people standing in the street or on the sidewalks until the gun goes off. The 5k course that I ran is flat while the 10k option is a big hilly.
I went for the 5k option and ran/walked it with a friend. It didn’t go well at all though I’m not sure why. It might have had something to do with skipping breakfast because I woke up late. It might have had something to do with the heat. All i know is that before the first mile was over I was drenched in sweat and my chest hurt when I tried to take deep breaths. My friend and I walked and talked for some of the race though and it was a good time. I wasn’t going to be going for a PR anyway.
The cool thing about this year’s race was the swag. It was the 30th anniversary of this race and in honor of that we not only got the finisher’s medal shown above but we also got these huge, ceramic beer steins.
Cheers to America!
