Running Fast is Hard

The post title kind of says it all, doesn’t it?

I’ve already made it one of my goals to run a sub-30 minute 5k this year.  Then a friend of mine came along and decided she wanted to run her first ever 5k this fall.  I’m always excited to support new runners, or athletes of any kind, so I told her I’d do whatever race she decided on with her.  She chose this kind of awesome sounding race outside of Chicago where you run through a corn maze!

Benefits of this race should include a flat course (corn fields aren’t none for their hills!) and more importantly, endless opportunities to quote Field Of Dreams.  (I love this movie, which was filmed a couple hours away from my home town and I’ve visited the site many a time for pick up games on Father’s Day.  Fantastic memories!).

I guess when registering for this corn maze race you have to give your expected pace and my friend said 8:30/mile.  Whaaa??  Never having run much before, I am thinking she just doesn’t know how fast that is.  Or maybe she’s just naturally awesome at running.  I don’t know.  All I know is that I have a LONG way to go before I’ll be running a 5k at an 8:30 pace.  Doing that by October is definitely a stretch!

To test out how much work I do have cut out for me, I went running last night and did some intervals.  I started out too ambitious but tempered myself to about six repetitions of 1 minute fast, 1 minute slow.  Here were the pace results of my fast minutes:

Speed Intervals

(6 x 1 min fast / 1 min recovery)

Minute 1 – 8:18/mile pace

Minute 2 – 9:07

Minute 3 – 8:26

Minute 4 – 9:37

Minute 5 – 8:52

Minute 6 – 8:26

Not sure where that 9:37 came from but I’m just pretending that was a fluke.  In reality though, I’m happy with all of those intervals.  My goal is to add a couple repetitions to this interval workout every week and then mix it up when I get to 10-15  intervals.

Hi Stephanie! I just found your blog and LOVE it! I’m a slower runner too and hoping to sub-30 this weekend (maybe!?!?! Still not sure!) I’m SO loving all of your hard training. It’s inspiring me to get out there and haul butt tomorrow! Can’t wait to watch you get faster and faster!
