Dressing Like a Biker

To be clear I mean the kind of biker that rides a bicycle, not a motorcycle.  But given the topic of this blog, I hope you assumed that!

When I was a kid I used to hop on my bike wearing jean shorts, a t-shirt, and tennis shoes or sandals.  I’d ride to my friends’ houses and we’d ride to the park or to the gas station to get candy.  It was so casual.  Signing up for a triathlon and RAGBRAI (a week-long bike ride across Iowa) in 2008 changed all that!

Now I look like this:

Yep, now I dress like a biker!

The “uniform” consists of these elements:

  • Padded bike shorts
  • Biking jerseys
  • Biking gloves
  • Helmet
  • Biking shoes

The bike jerseys are particularly awesome because of the back pockets.  They are the perfect place to put your phone, cash, ID, and gels or other nutrition.  They are also usually a little longer in the back so you aren’t showing skin when you are leaning forward or down in your aerobars.

My bike shoes are often referred to as my “space shoes” because they are so shiny, silver, and spacesuit-like.  These were a necessity when I switched to clipless pedals years ago.  Look for a whole post on this next week!

It’s gotten to the point where I feel weird going out for even a short ride dressed casually.  I guess that means I’m a convert!
