What Came First, the Active or the Happy?

Last night was one of those really good, active nights.  Immediately after work I headed to the gym, printed off my Mobile Fit workout, and hit the weights.  It was tough and it felt great.  Then I headed home and had some dinner while watching a couple of taped episodes of Jeopardy (me = giant trivia lover!).  Then I headed to my play in my volleyball league where my team was perfectly matched with the other team.  We won 2 of 4 games with all of them being pretty darn close.  After volleyball I spent some quality time with my team over a couple of drinks and then headed home.  I let the hot tub loosen up my muscles for about 20 minutes and went to bed.

It was a great night!  I was happy and energized.  I felt darn right ebullient!

It kind of makes me wonder what came first, the active or the happy?  Was I so happy last night because I was being active and hanging with friends?  Or was I out doing all those things because I was happy?

I think a lot of people agree that activity can make you feel good.  What did Elle Woods say?  Exercise gives you endorphins.  Endorphins make you happy.  (Happy people just don’t kill their husbands!).  It’s true.  Working out can definitely change your mood for the better.  This is often is the case with me (though not always).

The problem is that when you feel down, lazy, sad, you don’t want to go to the gym.  You don’t want to do much of anything!  That’s how I am at least.  I was feeling like that on Tuesday night when I got some good news that lifted my spirits dramatically.  I was going to go to work out that night anyways.  It was on my schedule and it needed to be done, but I wasn’t happy about it.  After the call I felt completely different.  I was excited to work out.  I was excited about life in general!

Are you, like me, more active when you’re happy?  How do you get yourself out the door when you’re not?

Loved this post. Made me think how I need to get back in that happy cycle. Somehow I fell out and miss it. I want the happy AND the active back.

You’ll get them back. I know I go in phases. Hang in there! :)

I find that when I’m out with people being active, I don’t even realize I’m being active and I see it as more of a social event. It helps me get out more and be more active because I’m with people I like. So I guess I’m active because it makes me happy to be around friends!

I agree with you Sara! It seems like I always have a lot of friends not interested in sports and working out with me. I’m slowly working on both making new active friends and converting the inactive ones!
