Where Do You See Yourself In…

in Goals

… 6 months? 2 years? 5 years?  What will you have accomplished by then?

That’s right. The Dreaded Question. Countless interviews have been botched by it. Teenage boys have suffered it at the hands of girls’ fathers for decades. It’s a tough one. Why? Because there is no good answer. Who has any idea where they will be or what they will be doing that far in the future? How can we know what God or life has in store for us, how we will react, or what we will be able to do?

Still, uncertainty shouldn’t stop of from hoping, dreaming, and setting goals. This week’s Fitness Blog World topic requires me to really think about what my short and long term fitness goals.  Below are the goals I hope to accomplish in the given time frames.  Let’s see what I come up with, shall we?

Fitness Goals

6 Months – The Preparation

By February 29th I will be/have accomplished the following:

  1. I’ll be halfway to my goal weight.  That means I’ll have lost 29.1 lbs and will weigh in at 189.1 or less.
  2. I’ll have PR’d in the Disney Wine & Dine half marathon.
  3. I’ll be strength training regularly at least 2x/week.
  4. I’ll be doing regular weekly speed workouts in hopes of meeting some running goals of mine next season!

2 Years – The Next Goals

By August 31, 2013 (which seems far away until I look at what I want to accomplish by then) I will be/have accomplished the following:

  1. I’ll be at my goal weight.  That means I will weigh 160 or less.
  2. I will complete a season of 3 sprint triathlons.
  3. I will complete an Olympic distance triathlon.
  4. I will run a sub 30 minute 5k.
  5. I will run a sub 1 hour 10k.
  6. Complete my 3rd RAGBRAI (week-long bike ride across the entire state of Iowa)

5 Years – Fitness Dreams

August 31, 2016 seems like a whole world away.  Honestly, all of my current ambitions are covered in the 6 month and 2 year goals.  Will I create other goals once I meet those?  Absolutely.  If you had told me three years ago that I’d be running a half marathon (or two!) this year I’d have laughed in your face.  But I am because my goals evolve over time.

So, instead of giving you the “I will be/have accomplished the following by the 5 year mark” I’m going to give you the “in my wildest dreams, here are the things I hope I might someday be awesome enough to be able to do”.  Mind you, I’m not sure I really believe I will ever accomplish any of these.  Its far fetched to think that I am capable.  They are, in my mind, the epitome of awesome (short of swimming the English Channel, which for a born and raised swimmer is kind of the biggest deal ever, or climbing Mount Everest).  So don’t take this list as a commitment.  Take it as the dreams of a girl who is an athlete at heart, who will never stop hoping she can accomplish more.

  • Dream #1 – Complete a Half-Ironman distance triathlon.
    • I have no intention of running a full marathon at this time so a full Ironman is out of the question.  The half-Ironman distance would be incredibly challenging but also potentially doable.  I would love to add it to my “list of athletic feats” some day.
  • Dream #2 – Complete the swim from Alcatraz either on its own or as part of the Escape from Alcatraz triathlon.
    • The swim from Alcatraz would be my English Channel.  It would be so cool.  Yes, it’s freezing cold and long and there could be sharks and jellyfish lurking in the waters and I don’t care one bit.  Not even at all.  One major problem that I see with this is that I have nowhere to train for the icy conditions of the Bay.  The Mississippi might work I suppose if I steer clear of the barges but it’s a little dangerous.  Regardless, a return to my swimming roots is in my future, I have no doubt about that.

There you have it! My fitness goals and dreams as far out as I can think!

What are your short and long term fitness goals?
