My First Green Monster!

I keep hearing all these bloggers talking about green monsters and saying things like “spinach tastes better in a wine glass”.  What??  I was skeptical.  I like spinach but come on!

To be honest, I’ve really missed out on the smoothie revolution.  I know lots of people love them after workouts but I’ve never gotten into it.  I’ve never tried.  Why?  Because my blender sucks!  I’m head over heels in love with the Vita-Mix blender my parents had when I was growing up but I haven’t been able to bring myself to spend $400+ on one for myself.  All the blenders I’ve ever bought (you know, the cheap ones from Target) can’t even crush ice so making smoothies is not my favorite thing.  It’s just frustrating.

Enter my fabulous Cuisinart food processor that came with a blender as well.  I’m not even sure I’d tried the blender attachment before, being disillusioned with blenders as I was, but I decided I needed to see what all the fuss was about so I whipped it out and made up my first green monster.  The blender worked surprisingly well!

Ingredients:

  • ¾ cup spinach
  • Half a banana
  • ¼ cup lowfat raspberry yogurt
  • ¼ cup milk
  • ¼ cup frozen mixed berries

The result was pretty tasty!  I’m not a full convert yet but I’m definitely opening up to the idea.  I’d want to try a few things differently next time:

  • Add some more mixed berries. It was a little banana-y for my taste.
  • Add my protein powder. Its chocolate flavored so I’m not sure if it would be good or not!

Also, it was only a pale green. Should I add more spinach next time for a deeper green?

What’s your favorite Green Monster recipe?  Please share so I can try it! :)

I really hate banana in smoothies (can’t even stand half a banana in an entire blender) so I use frozen mango to boost the creaminess. My favourite green smoothie combination is mango, spinach (or if I want to get crazy- kale), a bit of yogurt, chocolate milk (or almond milk) and whatever berries I have on hand. Mmmmm….

Mango, huh? I’m going to have to try that. I might like that a lot better than the banana too. Thanks for the tip!
