Health Market Confusion

Okay, I’ll admit it.  The Health Market section of my grocery store baffles me sometimes.  Who decides what goes in there?  What prerequisites do the foods have to meet?  I know several vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free products are there.  That makes sense.  Some of the others just don’t!

All the couscous in my grocery store is in the Health Market.  I had to ask an employee because it never occurred to me to look there.  It is a grain, not that much different from rice which is in the main section of the store.  The nutritional stats aren’t significantly different either.  So why is it not out by the rice?

That, however, is not as baffling as what happened the other night.

To start this story, let’s jump back to last fall when some anonymous person at work brought in Blue Diamond Bold Almonds in the Carolina BBQ flavor for all to enjoy.  I thought they were delicious and starting looking for them whenever I was at the store.  I found the brand at my grocery store (and Walgreens & Wal-Mart) by all the other nuts but never found that flavor.  I tried a couple others but they were not as good.  Eventually I gave up.

Fast forward to the other night when I was looking in the Health Market for nutritional yeast.  I don’t really understand how it makes things “cheesy” but that’s a whole other story.  I’m all for trying something new.  Anyway, as I’m wandering around looking for my yeast and wondering why some brands of potato chips made the cut for the Health Market section I look up and there they are.  Blue Diamond Bold Almonds in Carolina BBQ flavor.  WHAT?  Why are they there?  Why wouldn’t all flavors of the same product be in the same part of the store??

So now I’m really confused.  I’m going to have to start checking this section for all foods I cannot find elsewhere.  Maybe the store didn’t stop carrying Sweet Tart Hearts last Valentine ’s Day like I thought they did.  Maybe, just maybe, they’re hiding out in the Health Market.  They are gluten free after all… 😛
