Half Marathon Training

9.5 weeks to the Disney half so I spent last weekend devising my training plan.  This really meant researching plans on the internet, picking one, and tweaking it to meet my needs.

One thing I don’t like about a lot of half marathon training plans is that the longest run is 10 miles.  That’s not enough.  I don’t want to assume that adrenaline will carry me the last 3.1 miles.  I want to know I can finish.  Then the adrenaline can just push me to finish stronger or faster.

I chose the training plan below from marathonrookie.com.  It’s a solid 10 week program that has me running 4 times a week with a longest run of 12 miles.  I plan to add strength training 2-3 times each week and run the Thursday mileage a faster than my normal pace.  Probably the closest a new runner like me will ever get to tempo runs!  Someday I’ll learn all about those different kinds of runs and really understand them!

My goals this time around:

  • Stay healthy! No injuries this time to mess with my training.
  • PR! I was happy to finish the first half, especially after all my struggles with that pesky leg injury for the 2 months prior to the race. But I know I can run a half faster than 2:57:00.
  • Have FUN, Disney-Style! I haven’t quite figured out what this means yet but it will likely involve some sort of Disney hat, shirt, or attire of some sort.  Maybe I’ll carry a wand or wear a Daisy Duck hat.  I’m open to suggestions 😉
