Breaking Out of My Salad Rut

I’ll admit it. I’m the most boring salad eater in the entire world. Okay, that’s not entirely true because I have a friend who eats lettuce without dressing. Now THAT is boring. It makes my lettuce, croutons, and dressing look like a Master Chef creation!

Really though, that’s all I eat on salads. Maybe bacon bits. But cheese? Carrot shavings? Cucumbers? No thank you. If there are olives, tomatoes, or meat I’ll eat them on the side. But with the lettuce? *gasp* Never!

So imagine my surprise when I went out to eat the other night and found myself drawn to a Harvest Salad with Balsamic Chicken. This crazy concoction had field greens, dried cranberries, mandarin oranges, toasted walnuts, shredded chicken, blue cheese crumbles, and Italian dressing.

I have no idea why I wanted this salad considering it had 5 things I normally don’t like on salads. It just sounded so good! Perhaps because I had been eating terribly all weekend? Yes, Buffalo Wild Wings twice in 3 days is excessive. I just love wings!

So I ordered the Harvest Salad and it was delicious, fruit, nuts, and all! If I could have changed one thing about it I would have taken away the chicken. It was soaked in the balsamic vinegar and I didn’t mind that it was strong but it made the salad just a little soggy. I think I’d like it better without the chicken or with just a grilled chicken breast.

I’ve heard that your taste buds change every 7 years. I don’t know about the 7 years part but I do know our tastes change and evolve over time. Five years ago I discovered a love of tomatoes after a lifetime of hatred. Now, I’m turning over a new leaf with salad (pun intended… hehe ). Who knows what I’ll discover I like next!

Moral of the story? Don’t be afraid to try things you think you don’t like from time to time. You might surprise yourself!
