Remember Why You Do It

You might remember that back in February I posted my 50 Reasons for Getting and Staying Fit.  It was a great exercise in self discovery.  I’d never written down the reasons I wanted to lose weight and increase my fitness.  I had all the vague reasons but I’d never put them down on paper.  So I did.

Today a couple of awesome guys, Tony and Dustin from FitMarriage, posted my reasons as part of a motivation series.  The funny thing is that when I went to read their/my post, I was surprised.  I shouldn’t have been.  I wrote all those reasons down.  I meant them all too.  I had forgotten though!  How often do we get caught up in the process, the drudgery?  Workouts, calories, scales, miles.  We forget why we started the journey.  Why we wanted so desperately to be healthier.  To be able to play with our kids, nieces, and nephews.  To show the people we love that they can do it too.  To set PRs.  To be strong enough to tackle any challenge that comes our way.  This is what it’s all about!

It’s not just in fitness and weight loss that this happens.  New business owners get caught up in financials, bloggers get caught up in posts and traffic, parents get caught up in busy schedules.  Do me a favor and stop and think about why you are pursuing the goals you are.  Why do you do what you do?  Write down your reasons.  It doesn’t have to be 50.  Try 5.  Then keep those reasons nearby and read them often.  Let those reasons motivate you over and over again to give it your all.  Stay focused on what’s really important.

I, for one, will be re-reading my reasons on a regular basis.
