Do What You Can!

Life has a way of throwing us off track.  It laughs at our good intentions and throws wrenches in our plans.  When we face these obstacles we often think they are unfair and maybe they are.  Unfair or not, they serve an important purpose.  These obstacles show us our true colors.  They separate the people who really want something from those that are just dabbling.  They teach you how to persevere.

These hurdles that we face on our way to a goal don’t have to derail our efforts entirely.  There is always something you can do.

“Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.”
~Theodore Roosevelt

I love this quote because it reminds me that I can always do something to better my situation.  My running may have been put on hold by this (incredibly slow-healing) leg of mine, but I am not helpless.

I can eat healthfully so that I continue moving towards my weight loss goals and help my body get the nutrients it needs to heal.  I can diligently care for my leg my taking the time to rest, ice, and elevate it even though it means more time on the couch than I prefer.  I can stay active by doing things that will not overstress my leg: short walks, swimming (with a pull buoy if kicking is painful), and light upper body weights.

Not only will taking these actions keep me healthy and moving towards my goals (albeit more slowly than before), they will keep me healthy mentally.  Knowing that I am taking care of myself will keep me positive and motivated.

What is holding you back right now?  What has life thrown at you that is a barrier to one of your goals?  Whatever it is, realize that you are not helpless.  Giving yourself over to self pity never benefited anyone and a positive attitude is worth its weight in gold.

Remember that most obstacles are temporary.  Take stock of your situation and determine what actions you can take to keep yourself moving in the right direction.

Do whatever you can, right now!
